5 Low-Effort Ways to Break the Ice and Make New Friends at Events

8/7/2024

As the founder of Evento, I've been to my fair share of events and parties. I know firsthand how challenging it can be to approach strangers and strike up a conversation. If you've ever found yourself hesitating to mingle, you're not alone! Today, I'm sharing my top 5 low-effort ways to break the ice and make new friends at events.

1. Prep with 3 Questions

The key to great conversations? Being prepared. Arm yourself with three questions that focus on the other person's story. As Dale Carnegie wisely said, "Talk to someone about themselves and they'll listen for hours." Here are my go-to questions:

  • "How do you know the host?" This opens up the opportunity for them to tell a story.
  • "I love your earrings, where did you get them?" Everyone loves a compliment.
  • "So, what's your story?" Focus on listening and being genuinely interested in what they have to say.

2. Ask If They've Met Anyone Cool

Try this: "Have you met anyone new here? Anyone worth talking to?" This approach shows that you're open to meeting new people and asks for their opinion, making them feel valued. Plus, it might lead to more introductions!

3. Rapid Fire Questions

When approaching a group, ask them to give a TLDR of who they all are. This gets everyone engaged and lets them talk about themselves. Some fun questions to include:

  • Name
  • What they do
  • A funny fact about themselves
  • Their favorite color
  • Why they're at the event

4. Two Truths and a Dream

This is a twist on the classic "Two Truths and a Lie." Instead of a lie, have people share a dream they're pursuing. The group works together to guess which statement is the dream. It's a quick way to get to know people on a deeper level.

5. The Notebook Trick

Here's a unique one: Bring a small notebook and ask people to write whatever they want in it. Say you're trying to get everyone at the party to contribute. This stands out because no one does this kind of thing! I used to do this at college parties, and it was always a hit.

Remember, everyone gets nervous about starting conversations with new people. Go in with confidence, knowing that others at the event are likely looking to make new friends too.

Have you tried any of these icebreakers? Made any new friends as a result? I'd love to hear about your experiences in the comments below!

And don't forget, with Evento, you can easily stay connected with your new friends after the event. Happy mingling, everyone!
